NOT!!
Ah, SugarHouse Casino. Everyone knows about the plans by now. But, If anyone dares to utter the name in Philly, they will certainly get the 'evil eye' from proud Philadelphians concerned about the well-being of our communities and families, property values, traffic, river rights, and the importance of preserving our rich history in Philadelphia without the presence of looming casinos.
City officials hoping that 'A spoon full of sugar will help the medicine go down' (forgive me..I couldn't resist.) are sorely mistaken. And instead, fueling the rage is the residents fear that they will hear the slot machines from their living-rooms. The (2) proposed casinos (The other being Foxwoods) that are approved for license are a mere 100 Feet from homes!
'On May 15th, the people of Philadelphia sent a clear message via Philly's Ballot Box -- currently planned and future casinos should be at least 1,500 feet away from homes, places of worship, school, playgrounds or parks.
Philadelphians believe in a minimum standard of where slot parlors should be placed in the City. The two proposed slot parlors in Philadelphia are as close as 100 feet to homes.' - CASSINO-FREE PHILADELPHIA. CASSINO-FREE PHILADELPHIA site.
The residents of our city are uniting. Also Leading the charge is the group MASH (Mothers Against SugarHouse). While mayoral nominee, Michael Nutter is vocal in not supporting the casinos. The consensus seems to be that the reliability of cassino profit data is controversial at best, and that it's not clear that the reported revenue totals from casinos are sustainable over time.
If you agree that 'Sugar(House) and Spice is not everything nice' and you want to know what you can do about it (assuming you aren't yet involved), get the facts straight and visit the link above along with Hallwatch.org: which is really well documented. Another source is: Phillyimc.org.
